On Friday, August 21, I rode out to Rockaway Beach with my friend Mark, who was trying to get in early on a hurricane storm system out at sea with his surfboard. I was hoping to get a little swim time in, but didn’t quite make it as the storms rolled in – two of them, one pushing northeast, the other south. This first is coming up from the south.
The second from the north.
When they began converging the winds picked up.
Once they actually met and the winds slowed, the rains began and I eventually dove for shelter in the car. About fifty surfers enjoyed the choppy swells for a while, though I didn’t run back out to capture them on camera.
